Saffron Walden

Armoury, Museum street

'D' 8 Essex

Kelly, 1894 and 1902, records ‘3rd Volunteer Battalion, Suffolk Regiment (I Company), Armoury, Museum street.’ Kelly, 1914, refers to the Drill Hall.

We have been given an address for a drill hall in the 1930s but we are not yet sure whether this applied to the drill hall at the time of the Great War. Saffron Walden Year Books 1935 & 1939 lists Territorial Headquarters in Station Street. This address pertains until the 1970s when an Ambulance Station and Training Centre is recorded. The premises of B & R Carpets occupy this site (2008) and it is clear that there is a large hall behind the facade. We are still investigating this location.

We are grateful for the insights provided by Zofia Everett of the Saffron Walden Archive Access Point at Saffron Walden Library and by Adrian Gray.

On a site visit in 2008, we could not identify purpose-built military premises on Museum Street.
