Kelly, 1913 records the 'West Kent (Queen's Own) Yeomanry (B Squadron)' and 'Kent Royal Garrison Artillery (Nos. 4 & 5 Cos.); head quarters, Drill hall, Milton road.'

Kelly 1891 lists 'Kent Artillery (1st) Volunteer Brigade, Eastern division, Royal Artillery; head quarters [plus Nos. 1 & 2 Batteries], 59 Windmill street', though Kelly, 1903 records 50 Windmill street.

The drill hall in Milton Road shows on the 6 inch 3rd Edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1908 and is associated with the barracks on that side of the town. Some sources claim a drill hall on Pelham road, but it is not shown. It is not possible that the two addresses are interchangeable, because the roads are completely distinct: Milton Road is on the east of Gravesend, Pelham Road on the west (with the town dividing them). Possibly the Pelham drill hall was built later than the scope of this project.

We are grateful for the help of Michael Carter of the Centre for Kentish Studies in checking the map on our behalf.

Gravesend Barracks were on Wellington street.
